Re-certified as an Eco-Lighthouse

Å Energi AS has been re-certified for three more years as an Eco-Lighthouse. The certification confirms the company's commitment to continue working to minimize both its own and its suppliers' negative impact on the climate and environment.

07. January 2025

The certification applies to the headquarters at Kjøita in Kristiansand and involves meeting requirements related to office operations as well as setting ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

- It is important for us to actively work on this to take responsibility and raise awareness among ourselves, while also wanting to lead and create positive ripple effects for smaller suppliers in the region, says Jan Atle Liodden, Head of Sustainability at Å Energi.

Some of the group's focus areas currently include new reporting requirements under the sustainability directive (CSRD), employee competence development, and anchoring sustainability in all parts of the business. Reporting under the sustainability directive will be audited by an auditor from 2024 and will be much more comprehensive than the Eco-Lighthouse, which is mainly aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises.

Focus on energy-efficient buildings

An important element of the Eco-Lighthouse is energy-efficient buildings, good waste management systems, and climate-friendly canteens. These themes have been central to the new headquarters.

In 2025, Å Energi will move its headquarters from Kjøita to K14. The new headquarters will have even more solutions focused on minimizing the climate and environmental footprint. The K14 building is the first in Southern Norway to be certified at the "Excellent" level according to the BREEM-NOR certification, Norway's leading environmental certification system for buildings.

- As the largest tenant in the building, we have had the opportunity to influence to ensure we get good sustainable solutions. Among other things, we have worked to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during the construction phase and are now working to establish good routines to minimize food waste in the canteen. There will also be good facilities for green mobility to K14, including locked bicycle parking, bicycle washing, and good changing facilities. In addition, we have a strong focus on reusing furniture, says Olav Ausel, Head of Property at Å Energi.

About the Eco-Lighthouse Foundation

The Eco-Lighthouse Foundation is a recognized and effective tool for certification and environmental management, helping businesses succeed with green transformation. The Eco-Lighthouse started as a local project in Kristiansand municipality in 1996. Since then, it has developed into the first national certification scheme in Europe recognized by the EU Commission, and an effective tool for businesses that want to succeed with environmental management and green transformation.

Former Agder Energi was Eco-Lighthouse certified in 2016 and underwent re-certification in 2019 and 2021. Å Energi was re-certified in 2024. The re-certification was achieved after an environmental mapping with a review of the criteria applicable to the company and a visit from a certifier to be approved.
